Not load bearing - wheel snapped off base
I bought this for my hedgehog and put it in her cage before going to bed. When I woke up in the morning the wheel had snapped off the base. My poor baby didn't even get a single use out of it before it broke. If you're looking for a wheel for a hedgehog or similar small pet I recommend the Carolina Storm Bucket wheel. Its about twenty dollars and super durable and well built, the bearing is designed to bear weight, the base won't tip over, plus a wider wheel to make your pet more comfortable. I'm sure the flying saucer is great for pets who don't weigh too much to break the bearing but if you have a hedgehog look elsewhere.

Terrible idea for chinchillas
Terrible idea for chinchillas, I have ordered two of these and both snapped at the bearing in only 2 days!!! Chinchillas bring more weight then your common rodent plus they have a hop in there run as well. These are advertised for chinchillas which should 100% be considered False Advertising. Furthermore in case someone brings size into it. I've had a 5 year old and a 1 year old chinchilla break these cheep designs. Go with the Metal!!!! Hope this helps

Fantastic but short-lived
My long-haired Syrian hamster, Russell, LOVES these horizontal wheels, but I find the largest size disappointing. We are on our third, properly used and cared for 12" flying saucer wheel in as many months, and I think it will, sadly, need to be our last.
The first wheel we had was the smallest option - which I purchased since it was what Russ was using when I adopted him - which remained in tact. He outgrew this so we went to the next size up, same story. But when we ordered this largest size, the first cracked in shipping (not the fault of the manufacturer but inconvenient) and the second was noticeably warped when it arrived and snapped suddenly during routine cleaning after two months.
If you are looking at the small or medium sizes, I would give them *high* praise and five stars! They're basically silent, sturdy, easy to maneuver during daily spot cleaning, offer a nice extra hideaway (Russ loves to nest behind his, especially the medium sized wheel, which he doesn't do with his vertical wheel), completely safe for tiny toes, and I couldn't be happier with them. But the largest size is noisy, easily broken, more difficult to clean, and too expensive for how short it lasts.
I decided to go ahead and buy one last wheel while I try to find a good alternative since I know he will use it and enjoy it. Similarly, I'm giving it three stars, because it truly is Russell's very favorite running wheel. And, when it works, I would give it a five. However, I can't recommend it based on how short they last.

Structurally defective - it broke very quickly.
It broke from the base within a couple of months. My hedgehog is small for his age, and still a baby really. So there's no reason this wheel should not have supported his weight. He became depressed after it broke. He hasn't been the same since, and that makes me angry at Ware Manufacturing for selling such a weak product.
I didn't want to buy another one of these for obvious reasons - that it broke quickly for no reason except maybe bad design and because I'm not that rich. So, I've tried to repair it to no avail. I tried driving a screw through the center like another reviewer had mentioned but I was unable to replicate their success unfortunately. I tried other things. Eventually, I bought him a round wheel, but he doesn't like it. He enjoyed his flying saucer wheel and hasn't been the same since it broke. I could either buy a new one every month to keep him happy, keep trying and trying to repair the old one, or beg him to please give the other wheel types a try. I'll keep trying to fix this wheel. He loved it. but it shouldn't have broken after such a short time. In its design, there's not enough support in the base. It's clear when looking at it now that it's snapped off, and by considering that the weight put on it while your animal is running on it is concentrated at the bottom half of the wheel at all times. A reinforcement in the base would offset that issue and prevent breakage, in my opinion. That's what I will continue to do or I will use the parts to build an improved version with a reinforced base. The spinning center where I need to drive the screw through has posed a problem for me. Suprisingly, since engineering is a specialty of mine - however, power tools are not. Any advice on how I could achieve this would be greatly appreciated if a reviewer has found a sustainable solution to the structural problem in the base without affecting the spin. I've so far only been able to reinforce it enough to keep it together but it results in too much resistance. And so, an awkward spin that is not smooth due to the increased resistance he isn't strong enough to get a spin going. I want my hedgehog to be happy again and I want Ware Manufacturing to fix this defect with a simple reinforcement before selling more.

Broken after ONE MONTH
I loved this wheel for my hedgehog. It's super quiet and he really enjoys running on it, easier to clean than any other style of wheel I've had and it fits perfectly in his cage. I was beyond pleased when I started using it.
Until this week when it randomly broke and my hedgehog can't use it and is freaking out due to lack of exercise. Somehow the saucer part snapped off of the base (and my hedgie isn't too big for it, believe me) and it keeps flying off when he's using it. He's throwing tantrums and tearing up his cage because he has too much energy and no way to get rid of it.
Ordering a new one in hopes of it not breaking and working better, but I'm not sure if I'll be pleased or not.

Excellent for Hamsters and Fine for Hedgehogs
Great for hamsters. Just make sure you get the right size (medium 7.5") for campbells, winter whites, and robos. The large (12") for syrians and Chinese. Not my first choice if you have a syrian or chinese due to how much cage space it takes up but if you have a shorter cage it will work unlike a traditional wheel that might not fit.
I have the medium for my hamsters but I bought a large for my hedgehog. While it works for hedgehogs I dont recommend it for them. There have been problems with it breaking under a hedgehog's weight (I didnt experience this the 3 or 4 months I had it but others have). Also, Hedeghogs pee and poo while running. The poo will stick to the grooves of this wheel and that makes it hard to clean.

NOT FOR A CHINCHILLA!!!
This wheel is completely silent. I use it for my Syrian Hamster and she LOVES it. My hamster has a problem with always storing food in her wheel and running in it (silly hamster!) but this fixed the problem. Random color (I got green) wish I could have picked the color, but no big deal.

Perfect Alternative/Replacement for a Wheel for Syrians
I had originally purchased the regular size (6.5 inch) silent spinner for my new Syrian hamster Maple, as these wheels had always worked for me with my Syrians in the past. However, once she grew to her full size (I got her when she was still relatively young), she stopped running in it as much. I wouldn't classify her as much larger than the average Syrian. I noticed she was arching her back a lot and sometimes would opt to run on top of the wheel instead of inside. I did some research and discovered that the ASPCA minimum recommended wheel size for Syrian hamsters was 8", and of course, no one seemed to make a good wheel in this size.
I had thought about purchasing the 12" silent spinner, but when I saw how big and bulky it was (it's about 14" tall with the stand - too big even for my bin cage) I opted to try something else. From what I was reading, flying saucers are either hit or miss with hamsters. Maple, however, wasted no time in exploring how this flying saucer works and was running on it almost immediately. It took her a little while to learn how to run on it without being flung off, but now she is just fine. And no more arching back! It is not too noisy as of yet, although I've heard just greasing it up after awhile remedies the noise anyway. It is just as silent as the silent spinner (which is not completely silent either); the most noise you can hear is the pitter-patter of her feet on the surface, which can't be avoided no matter which wheel/saucer you choose.
Although I've heard others say their hamsters prefer wheels and they use the saucer as an alternative, I completely removed the other wheel from her cage as it was just too small for use. So whether you want to use the flying saucer as a wheel alternative or as a replacement as I did, I definitely recommend trying it out!
**I would caution any potential buyers into looking into the size of their cage before purchasing. If you have anything other than a large rat cage or a bin cage, I recommend looking at the dimensions. This product takes up A LOT of floor space; it takes up a little more than half of my standard size bin cage with enough room around all sides for her to walk around it comfortably. Just make sure your cage can fit it!
**UPDATE: After about 8 months of use, this saucer completely broke. It was great while I had it. I am not sure why it broke, but I decided not to purchase another one. Instead, I bought a Senior Wodent Wheel.

Horrible for chinchillas but good for rats!
This is not sturdy enough at all for a chinchilla. It might be ok for a rat, but chinchillas' back legs are too powerful for this wheel. Chinchillas need 15" wheels that are secured to the cage, preferably metal ones that are more durable. This company should have done more research. To advertise a chinchilla on the picture is as if they never even tested a chinchilla running on it! A rat should be advertised on the product. I ended up buying a ChinSpin from Quality Cage which has completely changed my chinchilla's life for the better! Chinchillas NEED a wheel like a ChinSpin because they run for hours each night. This wheel would in no way fulfill a chinchilla's exercise.

12 out of 13 rats ignored it.
The Flying Saucer is well made and well conceived. It's relatively easy to clean, and very durable.
The real downside is, that of the 13 rats I've had who have been exposed to the Flying Saucer, only one seemed to enjoy it, and used it regularly for running. The others just seem to be initially perplexed by the device, and quickly move on to ignoring it. These are rats who routinely use rodent balls to run around, and have figured out "puzzle" toys for rabbits and chinchillas in minutes, so I don't think it's an intelligence thing. I just don't think they like running.
