I understand this sand is special because it contains microorganisms that speed up the nitrogen cycle. However, I wasn't expecting flea-sized critters to be crawling around the surface of the sand. Too bad, since the sand seems to be fine as a substrate.

The best thing you can do for a new tank
They mean it, just add this to the tank, add water, and fish, and that is it. I don't over crowd my tanks I go one gallon under recomended fish load. I got the gravel too, and it is just that same. The best thing you can do for a new tank. Thank you all so very much.

Not as advertised
I purchased two pounds of this product which is advertised as "white sand". The first 1lb was indeed white however the second lb was obviously gray, and not just slightly off color. These are at least 4-5 shades different, and standing on its own the second lb is clearly not white. Even mixed together in my tank this sand will not be white. I'm not pleased with this product at all.

Color is not consistent. I can see other people have shared photos and received white sand but mine is defiantly not white. If it was the right color it would be perfect, looks very soft with tiny sand grains

Great freshwater sand substrate!
I have purchased a half a dozen of these bags of sand. What I like best is that they are actual sand, not "aquarium sand". They come in a nice bag with water that supposedly has bacteria in it (I doubt that part), but it is actual sand like you would find if you went and dug sand up at the side of a river. Be aware that it really should be washed out before you use it; there are bits of plant matter and other undesired items mixed into the sand. Only other comment I would make is as it is real sand (and not crushed gravel), fish waste does and will stick to it and collect. Waste will NOT be able to sink through the sand.

and my little Haku is a happy boy. My sand is ever so slightly browner ...
Fogged up my water for a couple days, but settled over time. The water seems to stay cleaner and clearer than before, and my little Haku is a happy boy. My sand is ever so slightly browner than the one pictured, but I feel good about the purchase.

Think twice!!! Over priced crap
Off color! It was a dark brown - not white (I was counting on white for my color scheme) plus? After cycling? It left an oily residue on top of water. No way was I putting a fish in there!

There are definitely better options, would have given it a half star ...
Overpriced for how little sand is in the bag. Clouds the water of the tank. There are definitely better options, would have given it a half star if I could...

This product was perfect in every way
This product was perfect in every way! When it arrived I was very happy to see it was the perfect amount of sand for my small 2.5 gallon Betta fish aquarium. I really liked the color when I placed it in the tank under an blue LED light. My male Betta immediately started playing in it. I plan to add plants to the aquarium soon. This is a must buy for small aquariums!
