Very pleased with this purchase
Very pleased with this purchase. Would definitely recommend. After researching several biometric hand gun safes I settled on the Baraska Top Opening Safe. I wanted something a little larger that could easily hold two handguns, multiple magazines for each and and other items. The safe fits nicely into a nightstand drawer. I recommend turning off the beeper on the safe as its quite loud. I attached a small, low wattage, motion activated light to the underside of the lid to illuminate the contents when the lid is opened. Works great.

Good long-term storage solution, BAD for emergency weapon access. Poor fingerprint reader.
My wife purchased this from BTA-MALL for me as a gift for Christmas in 2015. Initially I loved it. The fingerprint feature seemed really cool. Plus, it's large enough to hold 2 of my handguns and a couple of spare mags each. Not bad at all and I just sit it on the floor next to my bed's night stand. Unfortunately, over time as I have frequently tried to get into it to get a gun for concealed carry, to take to the range, or for whatever reason I have found that sometimes it takes 10 - 15 tries (or more) to get the finger print reader to read my finger prints. It doesn't seem to matter how my fingers are positioned. Sometimes if figures it out and sometimes it doesn't.
One night a couple of months ago we heard glass break downstairs. I jumped up and tried to open the safe. 3 minutes later I was still trying to open the safe. The darn finger print reader just couldn't figure it out. By the time I finally got a gun out my wife had already taken 2 tours around the house and discovered the cat had knocked over a big jar. Fortunately, no intruders. If there had been an intruder they would likely have had their way with my wife by the time I would have gotten a gun out of the darn safe.
The worst part is the only alternate way to open the darn safe is through a vending machine style key that is hidden under the name plate, which is secured with 2 alen wrench screws. Now I actually leave the alen wrench and the key in my night stand drawer as a backup just in case I can't get my gun out of the safe in the event of an emergency.
In summary - perhaps great for long-term storage or if you tend to lose keys a lot. EXTREMELY BAD IDEA for emergency weapon access.

I was looking for a better option to secure my firearm in our night stand
I already have a Barbara safe in the cabinet above the refrigerator. I was looking for a better option to secure my firearm in our night stand. I have been using a safe that sat on top of the nightstand for a couple years. I wanted to do away with this safe and find something with quicker access if the worse case scenario would occur since fumbling with a keypad in the dark would waste valuable time.
I chose this safe since it would fit in the top drawer.
I knew going into the project that I would not be able to access the safe in the drawer since it doesn't extend out far enough to allow the door to open completely. Instead I modified the nightstand so that the top would flip up to give access to the safe in the top drawer. I also installed a motion led light to illuminate the safe when the door is opened.

is to keep my toddler out while still having relatively easy access to a firearm in the unlikely event that ...
I purchased this product to store a firearm after we had our first child. I keep a pistol, magazine, and a flashlight in this safe and I store it under the bed. The purpose of this safe, for me, is to keep my toddler out while still having relatively easy access to a firearm in the unlikely event that I need it. It is not theft proof, bullet proof, unhackable, or fool proof. It does, however, keep little infant hands away from your firearms. The bio-metric system is easy to program and works pretty much every time. I programmed each finger on both of my hands and my wife's hands. It seems to work every time. The safe opens quickly and fairly quietly. It is not loud at all, but you can hear the bars rolling back. You can open the safe after about 1.5 seconds. If you want a heavy-duty, theft-proof, anti-paranoia safe...this is not for you and you will need to spend more money and get something heavier and bolt it to the floor. If you want a high quality safe that will keep little toddler hands out while being easy to open when intended for a decent price...this is what you have been looking for. It works very well for what it is. I have no problems opening it. My kid cannot get into it. I am happy with this purchase.

Great product for easy access and keeping your kids safe
Good product! I have this box sitting on my night stand next to my bed. I keep my loaded pistols in it. I use this product almost daily as one of the pistols is my regular concealed carry. I have a 4 year old child at home and feel safe using this device to keep prying eyes and little fingers away. There are two things to consider when buying this product:
1. Does it keep your gun safe from children? Yes, absolutely. I see no way a toddler is going to fake an adults finger print. The box even has safeguards such as an alarm that sounds if you accidentally leave it open. It is also long lasting on battery life.
2. Does this lock box provide you with reliable quick access to your firearm should you need it immediately? My answer to this is a 97% yes. The only time I have had this box fail to open on the first pass is when the finger print reader or my finger was dirty. Some people want 100% on this such as a 4 tumbler combination lock. I am willing to trade my almost perfect open rate for the peace of mind that my kid isn't going to be able to guess my combination. I can also use this by touch in the dark without issues, something I doubt I could do as well with a combination. I also believe that in self defense your adrenaline is going to steal most people's fine motor skills. Working a combination lock will be more difficult under these circumstances. With this product you just push the activation button and hold your finger down. You can load many views of your finger tips into this device. That way you don't have to worry about exact finger placement as it will know your finger by its side or crooked angle. It doesn't care if you are nervous or pressing too hard. It's too simple to mess up.
My wife and I are both dialed into the finger print reader on multiple fingers. Eventually, I will own more handguns and have more than one of these in a different part of the house. I stand by this product to keep my family safe. I have owned this product for over a year now. It is holding up just fine and my results are consistently the same.

The one I have is flaky - Sometimes it opens flawlessly other times it won't. This morning I got the red flashing light about 20 times. I gave up
and went back about an hour later and it opened right up on the first try. I had previously called Barska about the problem and they advised me to record multiple prints of the fingerprints I use which I did. I tried different fingers. I changed the batteries. I cleaned the reader surface. I moistened my finger. Nothing works. I suspect that there are unknown conditions that cause it to malfunction - Dryness?, Temperature?, My finger tips? Based on my experience over several months it has been about 75% reliable...2 stars.
This may be a good safe for many things but If you want one of these to keep a bedside or emergency firearm in one like mine would be a truly scary device.

Doesn't always read fingerprints successfully
The safe is big enough to store gun, ammunition, important documents, etc.
The programming is not too difficult, but you have to listen to the beeps carefully. The instructions say the fingerprint is registered correctly after hearing 3 consecutive beeps. Well I heard those beeps, but they were the wrong ones. The beeps I heard at first were short and fast. When I tested it, it would still open with any fingerprint. That means the registration didn't go through. You have to listen for the longer beeps. The green light will also light up to confirm the proper registration. Once I figured this out, I was able to program a few fingers multiple times each.
The fingerprint reader is pretty horrible. It can store 30 prints. I programmed one finger 4 times, hoping to capture different angles so it would open easier. It still takes 3 or four tries to open it. That's not very useful in an emergency. In fact, it's very frustrating. For the money, I spent it should work much better.
My suggestion to people looking for a biometric gun safe is too find one with a keypad as well. This way you can still quickly access the contents of the safe if the biometrics don't work. This safe does have a key but you have to use the allen wrench to move the name plate to access the keyhole.

that may have been a problem at one point if you weren't smart enough to test out unrestered fingers
disregard all the reviews complaining about fingerprint issues and unregistered fingerprints being able to open safe. that may have been a problem at one point if you weren't smart enough to test out unrestered fingers, but really... who wouldn't test unregistered fingers on a FINGERPRINT safe. if you have only one safeguard for a safe, you're an idiot if you don't test that safeguard. this leads me to believe that the negative reviews are bogus or from idiots.
the safe is solid. it came well packed. it came with solid and accurate instructions. it came with multiple warnings to make sure you register fingerprints correctly. it fits well under a bed, so if you're looking for safe storage for a firearm, this does a swell job. keep in mind if you plan on bolting it down, under bed storage wouldn't work since it a top opening safe. its a little smaller than the front opening version for the same price, but that one would be less convenient for firearm storage. this is just the right size for one or two guns, a couple magazines, and room to spare. fingerprint reading is quick and foolproof. even with its 2-3 second unlock time it's as fast or faster than any other unlock mechanism that i can think of. even if you mis aim and have to re-do, its better than fumbling in the dark trying to open a combo safe.hidden key access is a neat trick in the event of batteries dying. there is also some sort of power jack on the bezel, which i believe i read allows for supplementary power if the batteries die, it doesn't come with a plug for it though so i'm not positive this is the intended function, but i think i read that somewhere. this is not a fire safe so disregard reviews criticising it for something it's not intended for. and this is not a fort knox safe. it's steel and solid, but not meant to deter every possible intrusion, but it will without a doubt deter mosts threats and access by unregistered users.
totally impressed for the price. will definitely consider barska for future safe needs.

So far I am very happy with this vault. The biometrics work more then satisfactory and since that seems to be something that many companies are struggling with (the biometrics) that says a lot.
This vault is well made and heavy duty. As with anything made it can be broken into but they would need to take it off premises where they would have a LOT of time and make a LOT of noise to get inside.
The ONLY draw back I have is that it DID NOT come with the extra key as advertised. I called the company and they said I would have to pay $25.00 plus shipping to get the 2nd key. I passed and just made a note NOT to purchase anything from this company in the future.
As I stated, the product is good BUT when the company wants to charge me for an item (*the 2nd key) that was supposed to be included, then they lose my respect and they are telling me that the customer's satisfaction and their reputation means nothing to them. What they have told me in essence is that should I have ANY trouble in the future with their product I am on my own.
So buyer beware

Failure to reliably identify fingerprints
The safe appears to be 'secure' safe; however, the biometric reader is terrible. I successfully registered four fingerprints after multiple attempts. I could never get it to register my wife's fingerprints.
Once the registration was complete, I tested the safe over several days using different fingers to obtain access. Unfortunately, the success rate of positive identification is well below 20%. I can't trust the safe to open in an emergency situation. That was the whole point of avoiding the use of keys (where are the keys) and combinations (I forget). The biometric should allow instance access to the safe in an emergency. If the rate of failure to recognize my prints is less than 20%, I can't imagine the failure rate when I'm stressed, sweaty, and anxious!
Update: I read a lot of on-line reviews of other users and products and it seems the trick to getting ANY of these devices to work reliably is to record MANY instances of a given finger. For example, I registered my right index finger about a dozen times and my left index finger about a dozen times. Now the safe will open nearly 95% of the time on the first scan. Still not 100%, but certainly viable. The problem is the safe can only store 30 prints. I will use the entire print storage for two fingers!!! There are other safes that store 100's of prints. Seems this is the only viable path if you want two or more people to have access. Each person will need to record each finger about 15 times. So this safe can store TWO fingers (15 prints for each finger). Other safes that store 120 prints might work for 8 unique fingers. I decided to keep this safe for me and get a different one for my wife.
