5 Stars By Lisa Walker on 2016-06-25 She Loves It! I purchased this habitat as a secondary habitat to provide my syrian hamster with more room. It is extremely important to provide syrian hamsters with room, especially if you notice they are not very active (although they are nocturnal animals, working night shift I noticed my hamster was very low in her activity, and believed this was due to her limited space).
I knew this habitat itself would not be enough space, as the previous habitat also was not very spacious, so I tried to find a way to combine the two to provide her a duplex. I found that the OVO activity tubes were a perfect addition to combine the two habitats into one (I did have to buy an additional OVO tee to connect the habitrail habitat to the activity tubes). I connected the tubes to the right side of the habitrail habitat and used the provided clips to connect to my original OVO habitat, so please keep in mind if you purchase these tubes, you WILL have to purchase one additional tee (under 5.00).
The habitrail habitat comes with many special perks including the exercise wheel, upper loft, feeding bowl, and water tube. The ladder can be tricky to assemble if not lined up and clicked into place. It is not on correctly unless you hear the :"click" of the clasp to the loft. The loft itself sits on the outter rails and it is important to line them up evenly for sturdiness. The wheel is also very simple to assemble using the click clasp on the back. The habitat itself is not very large on it's own, so I would recommend using and purchasing the additional tubes, or connecting it to a previous habitat for more space.
Assembly was very simple as most of this is already assembled when shipped. You have to connect the door, wheel, ladder, loft, and the two outter rings (the rings must be lined up perfectly in order to connect, so if you're struggling, try turning the rings a bit and then pushing again. You will hear a loud click when attached properly).
Many people stated they didn't see a door in the photo provided, the door is located in the center of the front, and is not at the bottom of the bottom of the habitat, but rather halfway up the front. So if your hamster does not like to climb into your hand, I would not recommend this. Our hamster is very skiddish and doesn't like being held due to it's previous owners, however luckily our second habitat has a door towards the bottom she can climb in and out of to get into her exercise ball.
4 Stars By Brian R. on 2012-02-28 This one won us over compared to all other cages I'm obsessive about researching products we buy, and when my son decided to buy a hamster, it was my duty to research the cage. Generally, I found you want the following attributes: -Good ventilation -Protection from drafts -Enough room -Easy to clean
Reviews on other brands seemed hit or miss, and quite frankly, when I viewed the Crittertrail cages in-store, they seemed flimsy. I bought this one even though it had no reviews, but other Hagen/Habitrail products were well rated. I'm not dissapointed.
This cage is the same as Hagen/Habitrail's Habitrail Classic cage, but with nicer colors. It's hard to see in the product photos, but the construction is such that the white bottom sits below a clear plastic band. The clear plastic extends up the sides as well, and the center is made of wires. The opening in the front of the cage is made from clear plastic. This design serves several purposes: -Clear plastic is easier to see through than the red, blue, or other colors found on many other cages. -A good mix of wire for ventilation plus plastic for protection from drafts. -Wires provide flexibility in where you mount the wheel, the loft and water bottle. -The entire upper assembly (wire and clear plastic) disconnects from the white base for easy cleaning -The white base plus clear plastic provides a good 2-3 inches of depth to help prevent bedding from flying out.
The Loft: The loft is made from 3 pieces. The white plastic base clips onto the wires, and has a deeper well for the nesting box. There's an orange lid for the nesting box to help provide some protection from light and drafts. The ladder is solid plastic, and is designed that it can be mounted at various angles.
The Wheel: The wheel is not silent even though it's made completely from plastic. It does squeak, and I'm going to try to find something appropriate to oil it with. The wheel has a slot in the center of it to allow "stuff" to come out. Since it mounts inside the cage, you don't deal with any of the "stuff" going on your floor or furniture.
Water Bottle: Seems to be a step up from many included in other habitats. It's a plastic bottle with metal spout and ball tip. It holds 2 ounces (60ml). Doesn't leak very much - maybe an extremely slow drip. It's plastic mount can be placed anywhere on the metal wires.
The Dish: The dish is translucent orange like the other accessories, is fairly sizable, and widens at the bottom to make it pretty stable. It does not lock down into place anywhere.
Tube Connections: There's only two on this cage - one on each side near the bottom.
The Door: The door has to be latched in a specific way, since it's plastic that snaps under the wires. The small lock doesn't really "snap" into place, but provides a bit extra help in securing the door. If done wrong, I could see an escape.
Overall, this seemed to satisfy most of my criteria, in that it's easy to lift the top off the base for cleaning, it can be expanded, has a decent wheel and water bottle, plus a loft/nesting area. The partial wire construction won me over vs. the Ovo habitats which are exclusively plastic. While not perfect, it's a good starter cage and I feel I made the right choice for us.
5 Stars By Suspended Moments on 2018-01-16 Excellent Small Pet Starter Cage, Should be part of a larger system. Surprise surprise... All these years and I didn't realize that my dear wife actually has wanted a hamster as a pet! So of course, I bought out the store by getting several of the Habitrail habitats and putting them all together in a creative expansion system. This is the first component/cage that I bought based purely on its popularity here on BTA-MALL! The Habitrail Cristal is the standard rectangle with wire bars throughout the upper half and solid clear plastic apron down below, which connects into the opaque white basin as the bottom where most of the activities will be happening. Plenty of ventilation and well-appointed closing system. Everything you need is included and I like the overall arrangement. The Habitrail Cristal arrived basically already assembled, with the water bottle, clip, feed bin, ladder, and loft all individually wrapped in plastic. I lubricated the axle for the exercise wheel with olive oil... if you don't want to hear your little nocturnal pet running through the night, do that! I did measure the base, as square inches of living space is a benchmark for sizing a habitat.(147 square inches) A mouse may find this space adequate, however, if you're housing gerbils or hamsters, this cage will probably become a component of a larger network of cages rather than a stand-alone habitat. You'll actually want to expand the system until you are in the 350-400 square inch range to allow your pet plenty of exploring range. Additional things you will need that are not included in this package: Bedding (get plenty of bedding as you will be changing some of it out each week) Chewable toys Appropriate Pet Food ***Highly recommend connecting this to other Habitrail Cages*** I give this five stars as you can see your pet well, the components are well arranged, easy access for cleaning, steel bar spacing is good and bars are nice and stiff. Price is right. I would definitely recommend this cage for your starter pet without reservation. Don't forget to get your cage and all necessary materials prior to learning about and buying your pet.
4 Stars By Alyssa Black on 2017-04-06 Favorite cage so far! I actually purchased this way back in June of 2015. I wanted to wait and see how it held up and review it later, but forgot about it until now! I've had a few different cages over time, and they were all a PAIN to clean! One of the main things I was looking for in a new cage was something that'd be easy to clean, and this cage definitely fits the bill! It's SO easy, you just take the clear top part off (which doesn't ever put up a fight! There's a spot on each side that you push in & then it picks right up!) and from there you can just dump the shavings from the bottom tray part in the trash. SO easy! It came with accessories, which was nice. I had the loft in for a while, but ultimately decided to take it out. The ramp to get up there kept falling off and my hamster would climb up the bars to get to her loft, which I didn't like because I'm overly worried about her falling. So I put in a little house I already had and it works just as fine! Everything else it comes with is great. The wheel is nice, and definitely the quietest one I've had but it's not silent by any means. The only thing keeping me from giving this a full 5 stars is the size. It's much smaller than I was expecting, and I really wouldn't recommend it for a syrian/teddy bear hamster. I have a teeny-tiny little robo hamster so it's not too bad, and I take her out often to run in her ball or play in her playpen. Other than that, it's perfect! Nice looking, good quality (there are barely any signs of wear after having it for so long! My hamster doesn't chew her bars though) affordable, and easy to clean! If you're into tubes there are 2 separate spots for them. I'm not sure of the size but I bought tubes from a different brand and they fit nicely & weren't overly challenging to put on. I included some pictures for reference. -Size of the food bowl, which is so big my robo has to sit inside of it to get her food! -How the cage looks once it's set up. -And a panorama of the inside. (Which is why the wheel looks messed up)
5 Stars By Sami J on 2017-07-26 It's pretty easy to take apart when I need to clean ... Was looking for a new cage for my Winter white dwarf hamster. When I was reading the reviews a lot of people mentioned they had difficulty putting it together and I was a little worried. There were also a lot of mixed reviews about whether the door of the cage was plastic or wire. The cage I received in the mail has a clear plastic door. One of the things that drew me to this cage over others was the combination of colors it wasn't anything too crazy and has mostly positive reviews. When it arrived, the cage was already assembled I just needed to attach the little alcove on the side of the cage. It's pretty easy to take apart when I need to clean the cage. I removed the wheel it came with because I was worried about my hamster getting her foot caught in the little hole along the wheel. The water bottle that comes with the cage is just a little smaller than an iPhone 5s (attached a photo for reference). Overall I'm very happy with this cage.
5 Stars By P. Parks on 2016-06-15 Great cage for the money! Syrian owner (young hamster) This is a great cage! I like it but best of all our young Syrian hamster LOVES it. As I understand she is likely to outgrow it but as of now it is great. It came with everything pictured. The water bottle is very petite but have had no issues with this small bottle in any way. It is easy to clean and the top of the igloo snaps on and off so when you want to play with your hamster you can get to it easier. Our hamster loves sleeping and going to the bathroom in the igloo. The wheel fits our young Syrian hamster as of now and she loves running in it, hiding her food behind it, and even napping behind it. It is a petite cage but designed so well that you can fit additional hiding places and chew toys.
5 Stars By JustJoss on 2016-02-20 Great home for Stuart, great price for me... We love this for our little mouse, Stuart. His old home was one of those wire & primary-colored plastic jobs that just didn't pass muster; it was rusting, he was getting his little legs stuck in between the wire bars and the door would slam into his face from the open position. I was always concerned he was going to be seriously injured. Not to mention the horrendous colors that match no decor pattern in the known world.
The Habitrail Cristal is awesome! It's very stylish looking and it being clear, we can see what Stuart is doing even at a distance. It's so easy to take apart for cleaning, but is much sturdier than the other one we had him in. You can literally feel that it's better quality. The food dish is great because it's weighted so when Stewie eats, it doesn't tip over and the water bottle is just the right size for the little guy.
As for Stuart's well-being, this house gives him extra room (the other fits inside this one with room to spare), he can see out easily and he loves the upper level with the little bed area. The only modification I had to make for Stewie was with the wheel- I had to tape the three large slots so that his tiny feet wouldn't get caught in them.
Stuart the mouse is a spoiled little dude. For the safety and happiness of one 2 ounce mouse- and my money- this is perfect. That said, I don't believe it would be large enough for two pets or even for one large hamster. In that case, you might want to consider connecting two of these or buying one larger home for your pets.
3 Stars By Linda on 2017-08-21 Some issues with product, but okay for temporary home or transport This is too small for a hamster to live in full time. We bought it for a cross country move where we needed a smaller cage for the car. There were a few minor issues. It was mostly assembled, but the clip for the door was installed upside down. This made it impossible to latch the door securely. My husband was able to reinstall that correctly. The wheel had a large gap in the middle and we traded it out for our silent spinner. I was worried our hamster would get his foot caught in it. The ramp was way too steep for our hamster, but we placed his old house underneath which served as an extra ramp to climb up. He eventually learned how to get up there and loved sleeping there. The bottom out design was convenient for cleaning. I would only recommend this as a temporary home or some kind of expansion for something larger.
5 Stars By ConsiderThis on 2016-11-22 Perfect for my Kangaroo Mouse :-) I captured a mouse using a Havahart catch and release trap. I was under the impression it was The Mouse. And it seemed very clever. (I've since realized that there were at least three mice. One remains at large.
In any case, expecting the seemingly clever mouse to be equally cute, I had a Habitrail Cristal in hand. Indeed the mouse is super cute.
It didn't like the wheel, at all. It immediately took to the loft sleeping area, without using the ladder. I'm pretty sure, having watched it, that it's a kangaroo mouse. It can leap from the floor of the Mouse House (Habitrail Cristal) to the ceiling, where it catches hold and scoots around as if it has a Spiderman complex.
I had to get another Habitrail so I could clean the first one. I chose the Twist for the second Mouse House.
Cleaning the Cristal was a lot easier than I expected. I hadn't really thought people were being entirely accurate when they said it was Easy. But, it is. I don't know what that plastic is, but spraying Glass Plus (Windex look alike) on even the worst bits of mess, totally dislodged the mess which I then "picked up" with a paper towel.
The only problem I've had is the little round thingies on either end: When I was transferring the mouse it did some rather fast moves, it is VERY FAST, and I was afraid it was going to escape. I'm pretty sure it now has a clear idea of the danger involved in taking a peanut out of a Havahart... In fact, I'm pretty sure it's warned the 3rd mouse which has not taken a peanut that's even close to the Havahart. Anyway, in reaction to my Mouse's quick moves I somehow jammed the plastic bit that fits into the aperture, that little round hole, unevenly. And, it's totally stuck. It is not flush anymore, nor can I get it to be flush. I tried heating the outside bit of plastic by soaking a paper towel in hot water... that did expand the plastic, making it possible for me to wiggle the bit... but I could not get it flush, nor did WD40 help. I mean, it helped, but not enough to get the bit flush, and cleaning the WD40 off was another chore all on its own. So, when dealing with the Cristal, stay calm and avoid hard to reverse jams.
My jumping mouse has no need of the ladder.
I tried Timothy, 2nd cut, for bedding on the floor, along with bits of a wool sock in the sleeping loft. The timothy was pretty sticky (lots of sticks)... so for the Twist I used peanut shells for the floor, with just a bit of timothy on top of the shells, cut into smaller bits.
The mouse sometimes comes when I call it. And, it appears to like to play peek a boo. When it goes into its house, the sleeping loft in the Cristal, I say, "Where's the mouse?" over and over again... Then when it comes Out I say, sounding very happy, "There's the mouse." It seems the mouse likes hearing a happy voice at it's appearance.
From there I went on to naming the little creature John Henry, though I think it may be a female. My favorite kitty was John Henry and I loved the horse, which I was lucky to see years ago at Santa Anita.
So now, when I call, "John Henry" the mouse comes out... sometimes.
4 Stars By Rebecca Armes on 2015-12-11 I love the tubes and how customizable they are I have a love/hate relationship with Habitrail. I love the tubes and how customizable they are. I hate the tubes because they're a pain in the butt to put together and to clean.
Pros of this cage- -Customizable - you hook up the tubes and you can make a happy little wonderland of tunnels for your hamster compact - it's got a nice footprint so it can fit just about anywhere -Easy to close - the door is easy to close and latch securely-I've never had a hamster escape from one of these. We have lots of kiddos in and out of our house who want to hold the hamsters and I appreciate that there's no trick or technique to securing this - you close the lid, it's secure. -Visibility - easy to see your hamster and what they're doing.
Cons -It's small - if you put a hut and food bowl in there there's not much room for anything else. In order to make it really livable you need to get creative with the tubes so your hamster has somewhere to go and something to do. This cage alone is pretty much unsuitable for any hamster sizewise. -The wheel is loud - we don't mind it because the hamsters live in the living room and we close our bedroom door at night but if you have your hamster in your bedroom it would get old FAST. -Crows nest is hard to access. Great for the hamster because they feel safe and secure - bad for you if you want to get them out to give meds.
It works for our hamsters with lots of tubes and they get a lot of time out of their cage in their balls.
