The Red Wire
Good Camera. Now, Pyle adds this red wire, and no where in the simple directions they give you do they tell you what to do with the red wire that is connected to the Composite Video Cable. Of course you read the reviews, half the buyers don't know what it is for, half the buyers say they figured it out. However nobody tells you what to do with the red wire. So for everybody that buys this unit, here is what you do with the red wire. First you will have a power supply, this has a black stripped wire, and a red stripped wire. Run these wires to your back up light. Red is positive, Black is the neutral. Connect the red to the positive wire on your back up light, Connect the Black to the negative wire on your back up light. When you run the composite video cable with the red wire, one end goes to your head unit. There should be a wire on your head unit that says "To Reverse Light" or something similar. Connect the one end of the red wire to this wire. Now here is the kicker, the piece of information that is missing everywhere. At the Camera, you will connect the other end of the video wire to the camera. What you will have left is the red wire hanging out of the video connector. Get yourself some extra wire, connect the extra wire to the red wire hanging off the cable, run this extra wire back up to your reverse light, connect the red wire to the positive wire of the reverse light. Now, when your stereo is on, and your car is running, when you shift the car into reverse, power will go to the camera and turn the camera on, a signal from the reverse light will be sent back up to your head unit, basically telling your head unit the camera is on and you are in reverse, the head unit will immediately switch to back up camera mode, whammy, you now have reverse back up video, as soon as you put the car into drive or any other gear, the camera will shut off, send a signal to the head unit telling it power is off, and your head unit will switch back automatically to your tuner, or whatever you have it setup to do. Pyle does not send enough wire, you will probably need to get an extension video cable from Best Buy, Radio Shack, or on here at BTA-MALL. In addition, buy extra wire to extend the Red Wire up to your back up light. You may just want to tie both red wires in at the same time to your back up light. You will probably need to extend the red wire up to the head unit if you had to put on an extension video wire because the little red wires connected to the video wire that comes in the box are only about 4" long on each end. I hope this finally answers all the questions as to what to do with the red wire.

Great Product - what more do you need?
Excellent product, quality color monitor including night vision at a bargain basement price. The only downside is when mounting to the license plate, the width partially covers the existing inspection stickers. Installation was a challenge, more so for my Toyota 4Runner then with the VW Jetta. My first thought was to use Geek Squad but I decided to do it myself. About 2 hours for each vehicle to get connected to power and cable run to the receiver. The video cable wasn’t long enough for either vehicle so I purchased 15 ft cables with adaptors. You’ll may also need additional power cable depending on where you tap the reverse sensor cable. Great product, great price and I would highly recommend.

Plate mount Installed on a big foot 2004 Tacoma 4door pickup truck
Camera looks good but it was no ir or light to see at night but I guess when you hit the reverse lights it light up and catches the light. I can park my Toyota Tacoma sr5 2004 4door lifted 4 feet in the air better now thought and not rip people grills or debt their hoods. Nice product to have when you have a big truck or van.

Still doesn't turn on.
I bought this about a year ago and just installed it yesterday. First off, the camera cable is too short. 17' didn't reach my head unit from the backup camera. Next, there is no red or orange cable to connect to the reverse lead on the head unit. I will have to route a separate wire to the fuse box and connect it to the reverse lamp fuse. It looks like the new units have this extra orange or red wire. Just be aware that 17' won't reach far enough on a Nissan Murano.

PYLE PLCM18BC License Plate Mount Camera
PYLE PLCM18BC License Plate Mount Camera. I could not be more pleased with this camera. I like the the convenient and safety of the built-in distance scale lines and enhanced night vision. It was very easy to install with easy to understand installation instructions in the owners instruction manual. It works well with its compatible companion - the PYLE PLHR78 7-inch Widescreen TFT Headrest Monitor.
I had to mount the camera so the screws (allowing adjustment of the camera angle) face downward, instead of upward, as show in the installation instructions, to allow the image to appear right-side-up.on the monitor.
Longer license plate mounting screws were required to compensate for the combined thicknesses of both the license plate and the camera. Also, washers between the license plate and vehicle body should be added to avoid pinching the camera's cable, if the cable is to be run behind the license plate

Good inexpensive replacement
Purchased this backup camera to be a replacement for a different brand/model that quit working. Was able to mount this new one and plug it into my existing equipment (not factory) and have it work with no problems. I like that it mounts with the same screws as the license plate, and that the camera unit angle is adjustable. I'm happy with my purchase.

Outstanding for the price!
10/26/16 UPDATE: Another year of ownership has past (makes 3+). The housing has become pretty faded and looks dark grey, but the unit still functions perfectly.
I've had this connected to my Pioneer AVH-P8400BH for about two years and what a value it's been. It almost feels weird to back up a car without one now, and it's held up really well. In the day time it looks great and it's very usable at night also, although the picture can be muddier in less than well lit areas. To my surprise the picture is noticeably better than the stock camera in my buddy's Infinity G25, but if you're expecting cutting edge you'll be disappointed. I've had zero mechanical problems with it once installed. The black color of the housing did fade somewhat after a year or so, obviously how often it's in direct sunlight will play a factor in that.
FYI: the grid can be pretty useless unless you're parking on a completely flat surface. I learned to measure how far to back into spots from where the back line (on the pavement, not grid) just disappears under my bumper. Of course the car and the angle of the camera will influence the distance.

Installed on a Nissan X-Terra. This has a good field of view, but the distance lines are relatively dim. However, this could be related to the monitor rather than the camera. I am otherwise satisfied with the camera. The mounting is secure and the camera itself is unobtrusive. Noted that it does work well after dark.
