I have no idea why I waited so long to get this thing.
I've been an amateur woodworker for several years and somehow functioned without a router. "Pffft, amateur" you may be thinking to yourself, and you'd be right to think so.
I don't know why it took me so long to get this. I finally went for it after an endorsement from 'The Samurai Carpenter' on Youtube; he spoke highly of this compact router. Now it's my turn to speak highly of it.
The kit I got comes with an edge guide, plunge base, and the standard adjustable height base with the groove for attaching the edge guide.
Setup is super easy. The latch lock makes changing the base a breeze, and allows for a lot of options during your projects. I was switching in and out of the plunge base for a recent project I did; it takes no time at all.
The body is not bulky so it's very easy to maneuver. It basically feels like you're using a really fat pencil, which is great for more complicated routing endeavors. I was able to easily trace over some Chinese Calligraphy for a sign, just as if I was the one writing it. I used it to make a Chinese Chess/Go game board, which, (if you've never seen one or either) involves a lot of intersecting lines. Using the edge guide for the perimeter made that a whole lot easier (I used a straight edge for the innermost areas of the grid.) Then switched to the plunge base to do the dots where your pieces go. Just set the depth and drop it where you want it.
Having this router made all of that possible for this project, and I shudder to think of how cheesy it would look if I had to find other methods to accomplish that. I had been contemplating drawing it on with a sharpie after a coat of poly. That's just terrible.
The motor spins up nice and fast for clean cuts, without moving the whole thing around, so you don't end up on the wrong side of your guide line.
I'm extremely happy with this router and I know I'll be using it for many future projects. I definitely recommend it if you are considering it. I still recommend it if you're not considering it. I wish I had bought it sooner.

on 2016-01-06 Great tool!
I usually get geeked out about tools but I was especially geeked out about getting this router. First of all, when I was looking it was the best priced unit available. The day before I ordered the Bosch colt compact trimmer from my local Home improvement store. Both were out of stock but available for order so I rolled the dice. This was essentially the same price but included the plunge base so if money is no object, I might have gone with the DeWalt model. I honestly think the led lighting on the DeWalt makes it the winner especially with the flat sided, clear plastic bases. For the amount of times that I will use it, I went with the lower price option.
I had previously used a Harbor Freight, orange laminate trimmer which had no "soft start" which gave it a genuine "deathy" feel to the tool. Not with this model. This is comfortable and somewhat quiet. I used it to mortise out door hinges on my living room doors and door frame. I made a hinge jig so that I didn't go over the hinge space. Everything went much better than if I tried to do it with a hammer and chisel. Changing the router bit was easy and it stayed in place during the time that I used it. I haven't used the plunge base yet, so cannot comment on that yet. I do plan on using it to carve a groove in butcher block and will update the review afterwards. I will say that the Plunge Base is compatible with Kempston 99000 10 pcs Solid Brass Template Guide Kit With Adaptor
. The adapter fits right into the opening of the plunge base to use the templates. Otherwise the templates do fit the fixed base without the adapter.
Depending on the price at the time, you may want to look at what is available but I have not been disappointed with this at all.

Good Japanese quality made in China
It is always great to see a manufacturer go the extra mile and produce a nice package for the client to store these surprisingly good quality tools.
When I first opened the parcel I thought "ahh yes, another bag, meh, I bet the router is lightweight too" but when I opened the Makita bag I was pleased to see how well everything fitted into independent compartments and how well thought out the bag really is. A very nice start to a new purchase relationship, and from the good quality of the tools inside these will clearly last.
If I were a hobbyist or DIYer I would be particularly pleased by this overall package, but since I am a contractor it is going to be sad to watch this really great bag get battered and pasted all over the various jobsites, but you know what? It might get dirty and scuffed, but it is tough enough to at least last long enough to protect the tools inside.
This tool is used at worksites across town, it performs surprisingly well. Actually, it is a lot tougher than it looks and it can handle much tougher jobs than you'd expect from a tool as light as this.
The tool is is accurate, well engineered, well designed, comfortable to deploy on the job, reliable, accurate and very stable in the hand.
I am pleasantly surprised with the whole package which I suspect will last a lot longer than I originally expected it to last
I usually buy a more expensive European brand of tools but when it is not necessary to spend that much money Makita is always my first choice - in this case I am pleased I made the purchase.

Too many cons to recommend.
This router is considerably heavier than the Bosch Colt that we previously used. The base plate creates lots of friction (even after applying a dry lubricant) which makes routing a nightmare and the the worst thing about it is that it gets hot. Since there is bare metal above the small (uncomfortable) rubber grip, your fingers or thumb will inevitably touch it while using it and it becomes very uncomfortable. Not the kind of Makita quality I was expecting.

Absolutely love it!
Just opened the router today, a replacement for a Bosch router I bought back in the mid-1990’s which finally gave out. After I did a few test runs, I finished the two projects I had waiting on this tool then just kept routing every spare piece of wood I could find, testing out different bits and the different features of the kit. Absolutely love it, Makita has never let me down. The plunge base is a must-have, in my opinion. The router and all the accessories that came in the kit feel “hefty” and solid in the hand, and perform really well. Plenty of power to get through the walnut, cherry and ebony pieces I was working with.

An Excellent Router with a Tiny Design Flaw
I have owned a couple of routers before this one and by comparison this is compact and well crafted. It is easy to handle too. I took a star off because without a vacuum hose connection, wood dust collects behind the plastic shield, obscuring the view of the router bit. This forces one to remove the plastic shield which otherwise is in place for safety and controlling the flying wood dust. I still recommend this router. After all, the user should always wear personal protection equipment which includes safety glasses and a dust mask.

Very happy with this product.
Great little router. I use it on a CNC router table and it is a perfect fit for that application. I had read that it can get hot, but have never experienced that. I've used it on CNC fobs that took three hours of continuous running to complete and was never more that moderatly warm. The only issue I have encountered is that I can not find an eighth inch collet for this router, so can only use my quarter inch mills.

A good, medium power router that would serve most quite well.
This is a great little router setup if you need just medium power, versatility, and perhaps want only one unit. It is well made, the machining is tight, and adjustments are easy and accurate. I just finished routing 8 signs in fir with a hundred letters and edge work. I used mostly the plunge base...and achieved great, repeatable results. The motor never got hot nor did the router bog down when cutting full 1 inch quarter-round profiles in a single pass. Dust collection is decent...about what you'd expect with chips flying all over. Visibility of the cutting is good. Highly recommend this Makita router!! Looking forward to trying the other bases in time.

nice machine, fits my hand better that the Bosch Colt router
this router fits my hand like it was supposed to be there, but they didn't think to put in a light like Dewalt did on their comparable router. But I like the way it feels in my hand.

Well thought out tool
I have put this to use several times since I purchased it. The depth has been easy to adjust, the parts are well machined, and the storage case is beyond what I expected. I was just going to get the router and get the extra add-ons later. I am glad I got this all together as I have already used most of the add-ons.
