Disapointing junk. From a satisfied customer to a never-again customer
OK time to change my review from five star to one. After three months of very light use the display would come on but no sound would come out of the speakers. I contacted Sonic the original BTA-MALL seller and they were extremely helpful - They very quickly sent me a no-hassle brand new exchanged unit. This was October so I only used the boat a few more times before the season ended. Come this spring everything was fine and the receiver worked well for about 3 hours of total use. Then, right before the July 4th weekend, nothing: no sound, no display, no indicator lights. Checked the fuse - OK, checked the power feed - OK. It was just totally dead. I seriously doubt that this new receiver lasted more than 5 hours of total usage. It would seem to me that Boss has a serious problem with the design, the assembly or both. Overall I'm very disappointed and will not be replacing it with another Boss product.
ORIGINAL REVIEW - I bought this to replace a Kenwood Marine unit that corroded out after three seasons. The BOSS unit is much smaller and lighter and appears to have better protection against water intrusion. Very simple installation with standard color wiring harness that I spliced into my existing boat harness.
The unit sounds great although it distorts a bit at high volume with the "Loud" button on (I'm sure that an aux amp would cure this problem). I like the SD slot feature - I can load up an 8GB card with a couple of hundred tunes and not need to worry about plugging in my phone as a music source. The display is not very readable in bright sunlight and the control buttons are tiny but that seems to be a common issue with most marine units. I have let the boat sit for over three weeks and there was no issue with my single battery draining down as some other reviewer reported. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase so far - now I'll wait and see how it will hold up after a couple of seasons.

I really wanted to like this stereo but......
I really wanted to like this stereo but there are too many issues for the higher price tag when compared to a 'non-saving settings' unit. I previously owned the BOSS stereo that did not save system settings on power-off. It was a great unit but as I drive an older vehicle with a battery disconnect switch, I wanted a unit that would save my radio presets after battery disconnect and then reconnect - this unit does that just fine. However, here are my pros / cons with the unit that led to my 2 / 5 star review.
Saves radio settings on battery disconnect. (this is what the 2 stars is mainly for)
Adequate sound quality
Adequate button layout
Big Issue for me: The Random function for MP3s is not random. For example, if you have 1000 MP3s on a chip and a 30 minute commute - you will hear the same set of approx 10 songs, random but the same 'random order', each day, over and over again. If you went on a longer journey, you probably would get newer songs but the randomness seems to be based on how much time you have to listen through the same 'random' set - everyday its the same lineup and you have to Skip 10+ songs to get to new listening territory. The more you skip, the next day you have to skip those to get to newer listening material. After a few weeks, you find yourself not listening to 'Random' as it takes too long to skip tracks to get to new unheard tracks.
When you skip a track, if the number of the next random track is high; for example track 900 out of 1000, the unit takes 3-4 seconds to play the track. Lower numbered tracks are fine and play instantly, but higher numbered have an annoying 'wait time'.
Radio has a weird "loud to soft" volume on weaker stations, the tone goes dull and then sharp until you drive into a stronger signal. Strong stations are fine. The weaker ones problematic.
Radio boots into AUX mode - even if you powered off/disconnected in Radio mode (or other mode).
All in all its frustrating to pay extra for the 'save my settings' feature but then have other features such as 'Random' be so problematic. Another issue is that BOSS charges you to send the unit back to them (shipping) - it's a deterrent as the shipping would not be cheap nor speedy for the box it came in. Adds another $20 to the price tag as you 'hope' they fix all the issues.
I probably should have gone with Kenwood etc. I was encouraged as my previous BOSS unit was so good but did not have the ability to 'save settings' - probably my last BOSS stereo.

Will not turn up my amp loud enough
I bought this for the blue tooth. I had a older dual model with aux. only. I have a 400 watt mtx amp. I hooked up the boss head unit, like the looks of it. The boss will not turn up near as loud as my dual did. The boss had only one rca jack for front and back. I had to buy adapters to make my amp work. The dual had 4 rca jacks. when plugged into aux, it is a little louder, but not as loud as my dual, when on Bluetooth, not loud at all. I have a I phone. amanzon is taking it back, I will reorder a dual for sure.

the blue tooth is a low grade quality so the output is very poor via blue tooth
This is an awful product. It was installed professionally and only lasted 10 months. It was used at the most a total of 30 hours. First, the blue tooth is a low grade quality so the output is very poor via blue tooth. Most important is that after only 5 months the volume would go in and out from quiet to normal constantly. Most recently at around the 7 month mark, the face plate would not stay flush and stay connected. I probably only removed it a total of 10 times so I can't imagine that would cause it to lose connectivity. With the face plate issue came things like the volume knob would not work, other buttons not functioning. This product is a complete joke.

Unit DOA within a month of Installation
This unit replaced an almost identical unit which had failed after two years. Upon installation, the unit didn't initially power up at all until I fiddled with the removable face plate and it came to life. Then it failed completely after being in the boat (unused) for a month. It was completely dead and non responsive. When I tried to return it, BTA-MALL says it is beyond the return window. It was delivered 1 June, installed 5 Jun, Died 4 July. I'm enough of a tech to verify there is 12V being delivered to the wiring harness, but it is DOA. I registered it with Boss, so I guess I'll have to go to the manufacturer for help, but I'm extremely disappointed that BTA-MALL it turning their back on me.

Great product and worth the price!
Works great on our boat! Love that it has Bluetooth. I called a local professional to ask if he had anything with Bluetooth in my budget and he told me, "good luck." So I was nervous about this, but for the price, it is PERFECT.

Limited functions, but acceptible for the price
Nice radio for the price. Easy setup. I was surprised at the short depth of the radio. It's functions are pretty simple and easy enough to use on a boat. Only drawback is there's no control on the subwoofer output, and there are only 3 eq settings, which have no optional user settings. No matter, I'm satisfied with it for my boat.

Don't waste your time. You will return it.
As soon as I turned this on I started the return process. Sound quality is terrible. Speakers cut out when changing volume. Phones won't play through USB. I have installed many custom high end car audio systems, so I know this is installed properly.

Should have listen to the other reviews.
Thought i would give this a try even though it had more 1 star reviews than anything. Opened box applied 12vdc and nothing. This is the first thing i ever purchased that was dead on arrival. And even more disappointing was the fact it had a wire for constant voltage (memory). This is sold and advertised on Boss web sit as Zero Current Draw memory. So why the memory wire??? oh well glad i caught it during the return policy period.

Looks like it's just a POS unit
Worked for about two months, then started intermittently no sound. After six months, now there is now sound at all. Looks like it's just a POS unit.
I guess you get what you pay for these days. Do yourself a favor and buy a better unit then this Boss crap..
