Hot lunch without the lunch lady!
I purchased my OmieBox when they were still on pre-order. I noticed my daughter wasn't eating cold nuggets or cold mac and cheese so I had to go this route to get some variety in besides ham sandwiches or PB&J. I am a bento-holic so this box combines the ability to be creative with a nice hot lunch.
For those of you who struggle to fit juice boxes or utencils into the OmieBox, I order Honest Juice BOXES (not soft packs) from BTA-MALL in bulk. They fit perfectly, and have way less sugar and sodium than traditional drink boxes. And then on top of the drink as pictured, I place Fenigo petit happy face cutlery (Fenigo.com), they fit great! Although, it would be pretty handy to have a utencil pocket on the side of the box or the top or something.
When the box leaves the house, all is well. For the comments about the thread on the thermos, the collar which goes between the lid and the thermos base has one rounded edge and 3 angled which needs to be placed just right like a puzzle piece to close correctly. I was confused at first and then realized that even though it fit in the box, it was not positioned correctly for the lid to twist.
We don't tighten the thermos lid all the way, just enough to seal it closed but not so tight that my daughter has to get help to open it. I showed her how to work it before the first use so she wouldn't struggle. She has mentioned that her soup leaked, but I really think the issue is with her ability to close the lid tight enough (or at all to save time for recess), and less due to the box being defective. Like I said, everything is fine when she takes off to school. There are some great lunch totes that allow bento boxes to lay flat such as the 3 Sprouts Lunch bag or they have similar rectangular totes at Ikea. This would also allow for the utensils and drinks to be in the lunch tote leaving more room for food in the bento containers.
Besides the thermos, the rest of the box is not meant for applesauce or yogurt etc. For a seal-proof Bento, try the yumbox, or Bentgo, although they are not temperature controlled for hot food.
In summary, we are very pleased with our purchase. I hand-wash all the items to keep them operational. To make sure the thermos stays extra warm, I let hot water sit in the metal base while i prep the rest of the lunch and then dump the water and place the hot food into an already hot container and close it up! Stays nice and hot for lunchtime at school. It has even still been warm when I pickup at 3:00 in the afternoon.
I love Bento for the convenience that my kid has more time to enjoy her food without having to wait on the hot lunch line or fiddle with frustrating bags of crackers or carrots etc. Thanks for a wonderful innovative lunch box, OmieLife!

on 2016-08-19 Compared to the Yumbox.
Once in awhile I get something that I'm so excited to try and review. The OmieBox is one of those things. I'm equally excited that this was created by a Start Up company. Great wonderful, inventive, and usable things are being made better this way. That being said, I wanted to review the OmieBox as compared to the popular Yumbox, which I think is a comparable match.
Currently we own two YUMBOX Leakproof Bento Lunch Box Container (Tutti Frutti Blue) for Kids and Adults
. We've had them for over a year and half and my kids have loved them. Paired with a popular Skip Hop Zoo Lunchie Insulated Lunch Bag, Elephant
, it's a perfect fit. There's many things I like about the Yumbox 1. durability, 2. ease of cleaning, 3. ease of opening and closing for my son who was two when he started using it, 4. leak-proof, and 5. the compartment options for different food choices. All of those needs were meet with the Yumbox and I really had no need to get anything more. Except for one small issue -- soups. What if my son wanted soup?! I had no where to store it. Instead I sent a small Thermos Funtainer 10 Ounce Food Jar, Spiderman
, for my older son who I knew could open it. Unfortunately, my younger son just missed out on soup lunches at school,I wanted him to have access to doing everything himself.
So in comes the Omiebox.
Here's what I like about the Omiebox. In nearly all ways it's quite comparable to the Yumbox and most of my needs are met. The only one that isn't, is a need for a dipping compartment like the Yumbox has. I do use this quite often. The Omiebox includes a removable spacer to add another compartment, but it would do nothing for securing ketchup. I'd have to find a little dipping container that fits in this box, thus adding the issue of my son opening the small container without spilling it, and not loosing the lid.
What I LOVE about this box, is all of the little added things the Yumbox isn't. It's more durable for sure, and though it's a different size and shape and would never fit in a cute Skip Hop insulated lunch bag, you don't need it too. It includes a large carrying handle, and already is quite insulated. It weighs 12 oz more than the Yumbox. And of course I love the removable soup bowl, which is a fantastic practical idea.
So, if most things are basically the same, which should you get . . . a Yumbox or OmieBox? If this is your first purchase, I might go with the Omiebox. If you already have a Yumbox, I think getting a Omiebox is a great idea. For us, a selection of two Yumboxes, and one Omiebox is all we need (for now). I think the cost of $40 is a bit steep, so I kind of don't want to buy another one unless I have to.
By the way, both of my boys have tested this box and both (age 4 and 6) manage everything themselves great. My younger son loves it and right away wanted his dinner (soup!) served in it. Kid approved!

Great Purchase....one of a kind!
My daughter is starting her second year in daycare. I bought her two lunch boxes this year. The other lunchbox did not have a compartment for hot foods, as few do. We always send her with something that needs to be warmed up but daycare has decided that they will not be warming food for the children this year. I am so glad I stumbled upon the Omiebox. The hot food compartment is large enough to hold whatever I am sending her with that day and it does not heat up the other foods in the other compartments. There is a lot more space then I thought there would be. The lunchbox is quite a bit deeper than her bentobox. It is sturdy and well made. I do not think she will be able to open it alone, and will need help, but she is only 2. Older children will have no issues. I tested the water-tightness of the compartments by placing liquids into each one, sealing it closed and shaking it around a good bit. Nothing leaked into the other compartments. I am very excited about this purchase. Sending in a homemade, hot lunch is the next best thing to being home with her and cooking her a fresh lunch.

Cute little lunchbox!
This is a very cute and high-quality lunchbox. Super durable and a great size for preschoolers. My only complaint is that it's too difficult for my two-year-old to open and close on her own; however, given that it's vacuum sealed and leakproof, I really don't know how you get around that, since it needs to be such a tight seal. Hopefully, her teacher won't mind doing it for her when she starts preschool next week, Overall, I really love this and am considering getting a second to be able to rotate.

Great for PK student!
We bought this lunchbox for our daughter to go to preschool, and it putting things into the predetermined containers inside the box has been an easy wonderful addition to our daily morning routine. Things stay hot/cold in the thermos container very well and surprisingly enough, when the boxes held vertical, hummus/guacamole/other dippings stay in one place! The only downside is that our three-year-old sometimes has difficulty opening it on her own. She is getting better at it, but it does take some adjusting for little hands. Overall, we would you definitely recommend this box for other families!

Two thumbs up.
Purchased two of these for our preschooler and Kindergarten and they're a hit. The space without the thermos is almost too much room for us, but it's nice to know we have growing room. Somewhat heavy and I'm trying to figure out if I can hook a longer piece of fabric on the handle to hang on the cubby hook better and I'm not entirely sure it's dishwasher safe when they recommend hand washing (these are the only reasons I gave it a 4), BUT these are just minor details compared to the overall use of the product. It's great, gives us space for lots of options, keeps food warm and obviously for the kiddos love the look. Two thumbs up.

I think this is the one!!!
My daughter was SO excited to see her new lunchbox! She asked if she could take it to camp the next day, she is so proud of it. I like that the thermos is shallow, but wide. She will have an easier time eating all of her lunch, instead of leave the part she can't reach in the bottom of a regular thermos! Looking forward to this lasting a LONG time!

Ordered 3 lunch boxes for my kids and was excited to get them the next day! My kids are always looking forward to using the new new lunch boxes that can hold warm food!! My kids are 5,8 and 10 and all were able to open and close the box and twist open the container with ease =) The customer service and email response has been great with my simple questions on how to keep food warmer and how to obtain rubber gaskets when mine go bad=) I love that it packs just enough for lunch and most of the time there is nothing left in the box and no food is wasted.
