5 Stars By Jim Pellegrini on 2017-04-03 Great product, gerat support! Okay... I've had the drone for a few weeks now and I am ready to review. This is going to be a long one so stop reading now if you are not interested. or have a life... :) Sure, I chose this drone because of the features and low price to some extent but most of all; the great things said about their support! I have found this to be true. Use the email email@example.com. The other did not work well. The drone is incredibly stable. It flies like a dream. Beware of mild to strong winds outside as the drone is not all that heavy or powerful. Be ready on the speed switch in case you need that extra burst of power! I did have problems! I had a few motor failures (some my fault). I contacted Holy Stone and replacement was handled straight away without leaving me with a feeling that I did anything wrong and they were doing me a favor. GREAT customer support! (As others have noted). I replaced the motors myself. They directed me to a video on you tube and after that, I authored a motor replacement guide in PDF format. I am sure they would share that with you if needed. Just ask for Fanny, she knows of the document. The video is nice! Albeit the live stream lags a little and is a bit choppy. I would not recommend relying on this to fly the drone sight unseen. Best to keep it in your sight. I uploaded a short clip for demo. Recorded inside with normal ceilings and I still managed NOT to hit my wife's good glass decorations or wake the cat. Would I buy this or another drone from Holy Stone. Yes, definitely! The support is what matters to me most. Without that it would be a motor-burnt pile of black plastic and propellers, suitable for making a really weird looking planter with cool lighting... Cheers! Jim
5 Stars By TEAM GUY on 2017-01-05 The Case of the Sky Rocketing Drone. We received the drone as a Christmas gift for me and my daughter. We learned to fly it and we were working on filming while hovering. the camera works great with the phone app. The drone is very sensitive to any kind of wind so if you fly outdoors you will have to fly on the leeward side of a building as we did. I rated this 5 stars because of the customer service reply we had to a major problem. While attempting to fly it out doors on a very calm day my daughter synced the drone to the remote and calibrated the gyro. she depressed the take off button and the drone shot straight into the air at full throttle with no remote control input. The drone continued at full throttle until it was barely visible in the air.... 500 ft or so. It was then that it caught an upper breeze and began to drift away and no matter what we tried it would not respond to any remote control input or emergency shut down procedures listed in the manual (read the manual!) We watched as the drone drifted away into the state forest about 1/4 mile away. After about 4 or 5 minutes the drone battery lost power and the drone began a controlled descent. We watched as it descended and then plummeted into the woods. We spent the remaining part of the day and the next day searching for the drone which I believe is stuck in a very tall tree somewhere in the woods. This is where customer service stepped in... After a couple of emails and proof of purchase they replaced the drone. At first they offered 30% off but I was persistent that this malfunction was not operator error. They listened and Holy Stone sent out a replacement drone. That is great customer service. I highly recommend them for that reason. The drone is easy to fly and my daughter and I are having fun with it.
3 Stars By Daniel on 2017-05-09 I like it but think I will be getting something else soon Up front let me say that I am a novice and just getting into this. That could influence some of this. Overall I think it is a good flying toy and probably not a bad value. My biggest gripe is that it drifts a lot, even indoors with out the air conditioning running. I find that I must trim it up a lot right off the bat and that doesn't keep it stable for entire flight. Even though screws are really, really small, they went in fairly easy. Just pre-thread into landing gear and guards before attaching and it works well. Plugs and cables are also small and could be difficult for many to work with. Probably not avoidable. With a little effort it seems that replacing the battery could be easier and less prone to damaging the wiring. It isn't terrible just seems like it could be better. The clipping mechanism for the camera is not the best. if you bang into something it may become dislodged but the cabling should keep it attached but almost impossible to fly. I would consider redesigning it so that the WiFi and camera were not coupled together, maybe not practical but would be nice.
It seems pretty safe for a novice like me. I really liked that and was part of the reason I went with this model. I would have happily spent more money on a different product but the idea of high speed steel rotors while I was learning scared me a bit. I liked that I could fly it indoors without too much concern. I would of course have the propeller guards attached if you do that. It handled the inevitable crashes really well and I am not too concerned about destroying it while I am still trying to learn how to control it. I tried the flips and they were actually quite impressive.
As others have mentioned, lots of batteries are a must but once you have them charged you should be good to go for a fun evening. Again, too bad it is not a little easier changing the battery but I am sure it is much better than other options. Don't know for sure since this is my first venture into this kind of distraction. It got easier as I did it a few times but I still feel like it could be easier.
Would be OK for younger kids if not for the delicate parts. I am concerned I will damage the parts and suspect a younger child would be even more frustrated and probably destroy the battery and camera harnesses quickly. Of course with supervision they can have fun flying and you can take care of those details. They may still find the drift and constant need to retrim a bit aggravating since I know it is for me.
I am not impressed with FPV and the camera. It really didn't do it for me and have disconnected the camera and find it just as fun and easier to work with.
I did try flying it outside today and it wasn't really windy but any breeze combined with the natural drift of the product made it quite difficult and meant there was a lot of compensating actions all the time. I didn't find that much fun.
In conclusion, not a bad product and probably a good one to start on. I think many people like myself will outgrow it pretty quickly.
4 Stars By 0 to 60 on 2017-02-10 Updated Review from 1 Star Updated from 1 star to 4 stars due to the promt resolution of my 1 star review (seen below). Holystone contacted me right after my review and offered to send out a new drone immediately, which I now have. The drone is fun to fly and a little more responsive than the TopRacer drone I have. It may take a reboot or two , but when synced with phone app (Galaxy S4 android) it is pretty cool to fly with drone POV viewing. I have noticed that even after repeated calibrations the drone will still drift a little and the fine tuning helps a little. The video and picture quality listed as 720p is a little better than my TopRacer image quality, but not in class with higher end drones, so keep your expectations low. For the price point and what you get with this Holystone model , plus the customer service I would say this is pretty good beginner drone.
Previous Review : The one star is due to how the product arrived. Literally right out of the box I found a corroded battery terminal in the controller, which kept the device from powering up. Somewhat comical is the fact that I had to cut the QC (quality control) sticker to open the box. If you still want to take a chance on ordering this drone I will say on a positive note that the wifi app for my Galaxy S4 after one reboot synced with the drone and seemed to work well. This would be much more frustrating excpet BTA-MALL has always been amazing with returns. Free return labels and fast credit to payment method used.
5 Stars By CW Stevenson on 2017-03-22 Revised review, the replacement drone flies great, video not so good OK - I was very disappointed in the first one I received. However, the folks at Holy Stone just don't give up. Customer service is simply amazing I can honestly say that because I've never had a vendor willing to go the extra mile. I have had a number of questions about why I upgraded my review and was the camera problem every addressed. The camera problem exists on the replacement drone. The video is not real-time so no, it's not FPV worthy and yes, the wavy, jello appearance in the video I uploaded is the replacement, so no, the video is pretty much useless. I did upgrade my rating because of the flying characteristics and the ease of flying the drone. I received a second drone and it is amazing. 1). Easy to put together, screws were already started for rotor guards and landing gear. 2)., the on-off switch is actually very beneficial because it makes it much safer. 3). The altitude hold is much better than my other three drones. 4). The ability to have 3 levels of performance allows me to fly it indoors on low-level and, outside level 2 and 3 give you the power to easily fly in light to moderate wind. 5). The flight time is very good and I bought two extra batteries so I can fly for about 30 to 40 minutes. 6). Headless flight is really nice especially when flying outside and determining the orientation of the quad is difficult (I'm 60, so eyes not so good) I can fly it even though I'm not sure which way it is pointing.
5 Stars By Ryan on 2017-04-08 The great drone, worth the value of the price UPDATED from 1 star to 5 star I rarely write customer review unless i am too disappointed. But this time I am writing this being totally satisfied. If you have more money and looking for a drone for professional photos/videos, this drone doesn't meet your expectation. But if you are new to drone flight, and would like to learn drone piloting before investing to expensive drones, this is the perfect choice. The first time I had received this item, I was disappointed as the flight was so unstable. However, seeing my negative review holy stone contacted me and offered to resolve the issue. We figured out that the item i had initially received was defective by chance. The customer service representative, Olivia, is so awesome that she offered to send me new item at no cost and she let me keep the defective one for spare parts. In my whole online purchasing experience, I had never seen such a great customer service. The drone is so stable, and altitude hold works so nicely that it lets you take picture and video without being worried to control the drone. The camera is great for this price, one key return, and headless mode work perfect. Based on my experience with this drone and Holy Stone's customer service here are my few recommendations. 1. Don't forget to calibrate the drone placing it on the plain surface every time before you fly. Otherwise there chance that it goes out of your control and you will lose the drone. 2. Allow the drone to cool down at least for 5-7 minutes after each flight. I burnt one motor, and Olivia sent me another replacement. 3. If the drone lands on the sandy ground, make sure to check and clean the thin sand particles from the motor wheels, otherwise it will damage the wheel or obstructs the free rotation of the motor, and makes the drone unstable. When I was learning to fly, I dropped the drone several times. Many times, at least one propeller didn't rotate and I figured that out. When I cleaned the motor wheels with small brush, it worked fine. 4. If it happened that the item you received didn't meet your expectation or is defective or even if you hit something and broke the drone, don't hesitate to contact them. I knew that holy stone puts customer satisfaction on their top priority list while doing their business. Let them a chance to solve your issue. Based on my experience I promise you they will make you happy. I hope this helps.
5 Stars By CB on 2017-12-27 Great 1st drone/don’t fly too far up or away Great beginner drone. It will be easily overpowered by minor winds. The camera works fine but it isn’t HD. Great drone for the money.
**update** I previously posted that winds would not bother too much and I am here to say they will. I found that I could only fly my drone first thing in the morning when the winds were zero/calm. Furthermore, the link between the copter and remote/phone breaks up easily causing the copter to become uncontrollable. Last night I was videoing and had a great flight only to realize on playback that the video only recorded pieces of the event and not the whole thing in steady flow. Now this morning, with no winds, I launched and got the craft airborne, all of a sudden my link disconnected and it flew off. It maintained altitude but flew away and then descended somewhere beyond my line of sight.
So my drone is gone. The video playback was great up until you see it turn heading and break loose. Video stopped and I assume that’s when the link was disrupted.
I have decent experience in drones and own about four. If you purchase this, it is good for low level flying. If you ascend above the trees(which it can do) make sure you are able to descend it down immediately should connection start to become unstable.
I am going to contact holystone to see how they respond to this issue. Update soon.
Latest Update My contact with Holy Stone was quick and painless. I explained the situation and after a follow up email they are taking care of me. Feel confident in your purchase of any Holy Stone products.
1 Stars By Chester on 2017-11-27 Maybe I just got a defective one but.. ... Maybe I just got a defective one but.... Had nothing but trouble pairing it to controller. Instructions are awful if not just incorrect, why can't they have an American English speaking drone enthusiast proof read them first. It would fly for 5-15 seconds then it would just shut down and crash.
1 Stars By jim on 2017-08-05 What appears to be a great product, with tons of positive reviews turns out ... These are the types of products that truly frustrate me when I purchase on BTA-MALL. What appears to be a great product, with tons of positive reviews turns out to be an overpriced piece of junk. I can only wonders whether the people giving 5 stars actually used this product, or quickly gave 5 Stars in order to receive the free battery offered for a positive review.
I have owned a much cheaper Holy Stone drone in the past. I have great things to say about that Drone. This product has several major faults. First, it is extremely light weight. Any movement of air/wind results in the drone becoming un-flyable. Second, the memory card slot broke within a few days of use rendering the complete camera unusable. Lastly, the most major fault is the controls on this drone. As many of the negative reviews have noted, the drone has the tendency to go crazy and not listen to commands. Within an hour of flying this, the drone took off, and landed in a tree. Fortunately, it was low enough that we could get it down. Later, the drone took off again, and landed in a much higher tree. At the time, we felt the drone would not be recoverable.
I will say that I give Holy Stone the company 5-stars for their support. When I called their support line, I got voicemail. Thinking I would try back later, I hung up. Within 5 minutes, I got a call back from support. That is unheard of! After telling them what had happened (and overcoming the English-Chinese language barrier), they offered me 50% off a replacement. When I said that was not acceptable, they shipped me a replacement at no charge.
After thinking about things, I do not think this drone, even if the controls worked well, and the camera did not break was worth anything more than $50. For this reason, I only give 1 star.
I will say that we were able to finally get the drone of the tall tree. We are happy to send this back as well if the manufacturer would like it. Otherwise, it will not be getting much use from us.
4 Stars By nyc2mia on 2017-10-03 Awesome toy, uh, I mean tool! While cleaning up my side yard after Hurricane Irma, I found a piece of a broken shingle mixed in with my landscaping debris. (I was really lucky, as the extent of the damage we sustained was some broken branches and palm fronds.) I didn't make anything of it, since the piece was small enough to have been blown into my yard. I figured that, if it was mine, I'd see more pieces. Well, last week, while mowing the lawn, I found several other pieces of broken shingle. As I have a two-story house, I didn't want to climb up to see if that broken shingle was mine. I finally had justification for a drone.
I received the drone on Saturday, charged it on Sunday and used it yesterday, to check my roof. I was surprised to actually be able to fly this thing around the exterior of the house with zero experience! I'm not going to lie...I was a rookie pilot in a bit of wind, so the drone did end up in the trees twice, and once upside down in my neighbor's yard. (Speaking of which, boy, is that thing sturdy!) I'd spent most of my flight time learning how to fly the drone, so I was worried about the battery dying on me, while flying over the roof (potentially losing the drone on the roof and having to climb up anyway); therefore, I kept the flights short, but I had the comfort of knowing that I had a spare battery. I was absolutely ecstatic to find that the shingle was not mine, thanks to the super crisp video recorded by the drone.
I'm not big on toys, but I caught myself telling my boys not to touch "Daddy's toy." :D I wish the documentation was a little more thorough; for example, I don't know how to activate the altitude hold function, and (although I followed the instructions) I couldn't enable headless mode, but I was still able to manage. I'm going to keep practicing my flying; perhaps I can use the drone to record the kids' flag football games, next.
