I was looking for a replacement for a 2-stroke gas trimmer that I had. I don't have a huge yard now, and I was thinking I could just get one of the cheaper Black and Decker plug-in or battery powered trimmers, but since I like to do things overkill, and because I'm partial to DeWalt, I figured I'd give this a shot.
It probably has more power than my old gas trimmer. The benefit of the electric motor is that you get basically instant throttle (potentiometer?) response and immense torque even at low speeds. It has 2 settings, low and high. For my average yard, I kept it in low, and even then, half throttle did basically everything. Only for cutting through tough stuff (small saplings etc) did I have to squeeze it to full power. I tried it on high mode a few times just for fun, but I didn't come across anything that necessitated the high setting.
EASE OF USE
Just charge the battery and go. No starting, no gas. I put about 2 hours of use on it the first time, and the battery dipped down to 2/3 bars on the pack. I didn't find it to be too heavy, comparable to a gas trimmer. My one minor quibble would be that the shield is a bit tiny, so yeah, you probably get more junk on you compared to others, but you shouldn't be wearing your Sunday best anyways doing yard work.
In addition, the battery pack is compatible with a range of DeWalt stuff, so I might end up replacing a few corded tools as well.
Definitely a capable tool. Beats any gas trimer I've had. Makes quick work of basically everything. Pros could definitely use this, although you'd probably have to buy and extra battery or two for all-day use.

Best weed eater EVER!
WOW! This thing is a beast! First off , I gave it 4 stars because it needs a shoulder strap and a bigger guard ( which you can purchase extra)and it comes with a regular 20v charger. Not the fast charging flexvolt charger. What kind of bull is that? I also purchased the grass gator 4750 w/metal blades and put on it. Holy smokes this thing cuts through 1"-1.25" saplings like they're just blades of grass no slow down or hesitation at all. It lightweight ad easy to manipulate. Since there's no gas or oil there's really no wrong way to hold it . I used it like an edger, a standard trimmer , and even sculpted my hedges with it. I absolutely love it! I'd recommend this to anyone matter how small the yard. I charged the battery fully before use. Ran it for 4hrs straight and I couldn't tell any loss of power from the first 5 mins to the 4 hr mark. I had to quit because of rain but I bet I could've got another 4 hrs at least before having to charge battery. They say power of corded without the cord, well on this it's true no lie. Well I'll update my review in a month or two after some good hard hrs get put on it.

The best tool I have perchest from DeWalt so far.
Received my trimmer today . Let me start by saying that trimming my lawn is and always will be work that I don't like. But knowing that I will never have to pull on a gas motor again makes me very happy.
My lawn was two weeks over due for trimming. I have a 100'x150' lot. I trim all for edges. I have 5 trees a 14'x14' shed that I trim all around. And 3 sides of my house. I edg trim 50' of drive way. After 20 to 25 min. of that, the battery has all 3 lights still lit. So I started down the street on the ditch. It has 2' tall weeds and on the low setting I couldn't stop the motor. Not sure why there is a high setting. Found no reason for it. This trimmer is everything that my gas STHIL fs 44 is.
I have no regrets on this purchase at all. No more old gas I this guy's shead.

Powerful, but bent after a few uses.
This trimmer bent after first few uses. I really like this trimmer. It has great power and good battery life. However after a few uses the lower portion of the pole bent to a curved shape. After calling Dewalt they said I could mail it to the nearest service center 350 miles away. It is summer and I still need to trim weekly. I feel the least they could do is send out a new replacement, assuming they fixed the strength of the lower pole. I am now trying to contact them again for other options.

Bad noise and vibration but customer service made up for it.
Worked great the first 2 times was pleased with the length of time the battery lasted. However on the third use the spinning head must have lost a bearing because there is a mad vibration and noise when it spins. I will update my review once I get ahold of Dewalt. Could just be a faulty part.
Dewalt took great care of me they full replaced my faulty weedeater. I really do think mine was a one off problem. I'm very happy how they handled it. I give it five stars if the second one messes up I will let you know.

Although a little on the heavy side and quite long this thing really rocks! It has a lot of power and plows through heavy grass and soft brush like a hog. If you plan to mow brush or strip leaves from branches, etc, step up to the .095 string. The .080 does a fine job in even heavy grass but brush stock larger than a pencil, fence posts, and stone walls tend to eat up the .080 string. I mowed for about an hour on the low speed setting and throttled back on the variable-speed trigger quite a bit when trimming grass around trees so as not to beat up the tree bark. The only down side so far is loading string. It's a pain. I wish it had preloaded string cartridges but that might not be cost-effective for double string trimmers. Anyway, I'm very pleased with this trimmer and I now have another battery and charger in my arsenal of DeWalt 20 and 60 volt tools. I think the chain saw will be my next purchase.

Excellent performance but poor durability and part distribution.
This is an awesome brushcutter with plenty of power and awesome batterylife! However, with very little uses mine broke down a week ago. I've been using it for a year, probably twice a month. It still looks new! I just took it out and it spun for about 2 seconds. After that nothing. After opening it up everything seems in tact. The culprit looks like the voltage controller. I own a lot of dewalt tools and maintain and fix all of them myself. This is the first time I can't find a replacement part based on the part number!
This product is below dewalt quality. It doesn't conpare to the brushed and brushless powerdrills and other tools (over 25) I have. Electric gardening tools make the job so much more enjoyable, but stay clear of this product until an updated version is released!

the 60v max has been a great system for me
the 60v max has been a great system for me, started out with the grinder for work and fabrication (albeit, a 2ah battery is limited, great for short jobs!) so when I saw the dewalt weed wacker and chainsaw, i originally bought the chainsaw- but they weren't going to be shipping for awhile so i changed my order to weedwacker, great choice... this thing trims the entire property, havent had to refill the spool but even if it does go through alot, thats a better deal than oil/gas and constant maintenance cleaning air filters. weed wacked right after a light rain, still worked well

Best Toy I've Bought Myself in Years.
Instant satisfaction! I love this thing! No gas, no mixing no fumes, no pulling and pulling. Better balanced than my Ryobi gas and lighter too. A fraction of the noise- vastly quieter! Considerably less vibration. I could still feel my fingers after an hour. Surprisingly powerful- rivals my gas trimmer and I only had it on the low setting. I love that it ran longer on the battery than I get out of two tanks of gas. I know how much of my yard I can trim on a tank. I did it on one charge and still had juice left. The string feed was surprisingly well controlled. Even the line they load it with was pretty good stuff! Tougher than what I usually buy! Don't hesitate- buy this thing! Particularly if you're like me and middle age is here! And as for the one star reviews- if yours doesn't work right- send it back and get another for goodness sake. You'd send back a $20 steak if it wasn't right wouldn't you?
