SOLVED: Z-Wave and Wink requires some extra steps No thanks to BTA-MALL Warehouse or help from Wink
Revised 2018 Jan 09
After another promise of a callback (I asked for Skype - as I am not an A**** type), I called back and insisted on being connected to a Level 2 tech. Richard called me within 10-15 minutes as promised and we quickly got this resolved. Turns out they may have been looking for me on Skype using the email address I registered with at August. I incorrectly assumed they would call me on my registered phone number and then move over to Skype/Facetime.
The Z-Wave issue is in fact a problem with the Wink app. August Support indicated this is being worked on, but until Wink issues an update, here is how one gets their August Smart Lock Pro to appear in Wink connected via Z-Wave. Follow the steps in the FAQ for adding the Lock to the Z-Wave network in Wink, adding the following:
- when the Wink app Connect Now button is pressed, the Wink Hub LED starts rapidily flashing blue (pairing/inclusion mode)
- press "My hub is in inclusion mode" in the August app, OK on the Security prompt, and the Wink Hub LED should quickly flash solid green for about a second, and then turn solid blue (pairing is successful).
- OK to click done in the August app, but probably the Wink app will still be spinning as if it is trying to connect, and then will time out and ask if you want to Try Again.
- IMPORTANT - DO NOT press Try Again or Help. Just quit the Wink app (go to mobile device home screen, or better yet restart)
- Unplug power to the Wink hub for 10 seconds and then plug it back in to reboot the Wink Hub.
- When the Wink Hub has finished rebooting, and the LED is solid blue (there may be a couple of minutes of intermittent green flashes as the Z-Wave network refreshes), you can start the Wink app where you will find your new Lock and its battery status.
- DoorSense status will not be available on the Wink app until Wink includes it in an update (the lock does report that info in its Z-Wave communications with the Wink Hub).
- Once Z-Wave connections have been established with the hub, the August app will continue to ONLY communicate with the lock via Bluetooth (when close enough to the lock). The Wink app can lock and unlock remotely (as well as locally even with no internet).
- Hopefully when Wink successfully integrates their platform with August over Z-Wave, the August app will be able to communicate with the lock via Z-Wave allowing use of the enhanced access features.
So I got this Smart Lock Pro used from BTA-MALL Warehouse. Like others have reported, this used lock was still registered to a prior user. The Android August Home app only reports an error. It was not until I borrowed an iPhone that I saw a more detailed error message that indicated it was already registered. August Support was easy to get on the phone, even on a holiday weekend, and was patient to walk me through the steps which included emailing them a copy of my receipt in a photo together with the back of the lock.
But then I found myself unable to connect this lock successfully to the Z-Wave network on my Wink 1.8 Hub. I spent another couple of hours on the phone with August support pairing and excluding the lock from Z-wave. That works quickly, but the Wink app never sees the lock. Even went so far as to delete five other Z-wave devices from my hub to make it as simple as possible. as well as refreshing and then resetting my Wink Z-wave. Tech said they would call me back to Facetime or Skype to get this working, but it never happened (more than 48 hours ago).
If they know they need to provide expert assistance to get this working (see Jan 4 review), then they need to admit this up front and make it happen, rather than wasting a lot of my time and lower level tech time.
No way I would install this device before setting up the software connection to the lock.

Great smart lock
Purchased used and thankfully it arrived in mint condition. Super easy to replace my gen 2 lock with this one. Z-wave setup was a bit of a headache to get working with SmartThings, but I suppose I don’t have much use for that connection at the moment anyways. Maybe if I didn’t already have a door open/close sensor setup to trigger hallway lights.

Is a nice addition to my door.
First off, I really like this automatic lock. It was a relatively easy installation. Automatic opening (when I come home) and automatic locking (when I leave the house) work very intuitively. Not so intuitive is when I go outside temporarily, such as yard work, the automatic locking action happens, but just getting close to the door again will not open the lock. I have to open my phone to access the app or use my key to open the door. I would give 5 stars if a voice command or perhaps a tap on the phone would open the door in not so intuitive situation.

For the most part it worked. The set up ...
For the most part it worked. The set up was a little bit more challenging for both cell phone. I did use the sensor which didn’t work properly all the time because it would lock when the door was open. Unfortunately I return of the units because I feel for the money it shouldn’t be as complicated.

Mixed bag - but definitely worth it.
The third Generation August Smart Lock is a mixed bag.
Overall though, the pro's far outweigh the cons. One thing I noticed when I first got the Lock was that it was *big*. I know that you can't fit the batteries, the smarts and the motor all into a smaller form factor, but it sticks out from the door.
That being said, I added Door Sense (it can tell when the door is open or closed) and turned on Auto Unlock and Lock, and it is pretty impressive that I can go outside and have the door unlock for me when I come back home. I have given my wife access to the Lock, and I also get notified when she leaves the house.
Finally, this lock supports Z-Wave. This is a must for me, given that I have a lot of DIY functionality built into my home. I like being able to check on the door remotely, and have it do things based on events happening in my home.
Overall, I really like this lock and would recommend it to my Family.

I got this lock few months back and it has been an a mixed of some bad but mostly good experiences
This lock has mixed reviews but I have to say that any negative reviews has to do more with the app rather than the lock itself. I do mention other August products in this review but they relate to my final thoughts and feelings towards the lock. I got this lock few months back and it has been an a mixed of some bad but mostly good experiences. The installation was not bad at all , I was able to install the lock and the door sense under 30 minutes. The only issue I ran into was that I used a drill to tighten the screws and when latching the smart lock it seemed to be too tight where it caused jam errors when setting up the lock in the phone app. I recommend hand tightening the screws when installing the lock to avoid these errors. When installing the door sense whether you chose the external or internal door sense installation just make sure you follow the proper installation location to avoid any problems in the future. Once you have the hardware side set up the process to setup your lock on the software side is pretty simple , whether you have IOS or Android the process is very similar. The process of Installing the batteries is pretty simple and do not have to replace them for several weeks or longer. Now comes the mixed experiences I had with Android and iOS. In my opinion iOS seems to be less buggy than Android specially when using features like auto lock/ unlock. With Android the auto lock worked perfectly but the auto unlock was a hit and miss and it with iOS I had more positive results. This issue has been greatly improved for both platforms with a recent firmware update(12/02/2017). When setting up zwave I had a much pleasent experience with Android and when updating the firmware iOS seemed to go smoother. The door sense worked perfectly for both platforms and with iOS you have the advantage to setup with homekit to give you notifications when the door is open or closed and using it with Siri. I also got a hold of the August connect , which allows you to remotely lock or unlock your lock or just simply monitor your lock when being away..this device also works flawlessly with both iOS and Android. When it comes down to it I have to say that if you're looking for a smart lock with home automation features and integration options this is the lock to get . My recommendation to avoid any app issues that people are mostly complaining about is to make sure you have the latest firmware ..Duracell or Energizer batteries and that your door sense is installed in the correct location . If possible get this lock with the smart keypad from August . My parents live with me and they are in their 70s and there's no way I can get them to unlock/ lock with a smart phone . They forget to take their phone sometimes when they go out so you can kiss the auto unlock feature goodbye when that happens but with the smart keypad locking and unlocking just makes it easier and with it you never really have to ever open the app unless I want change any options or to update the firmware. I know there are locks out there with built in keypads but believe me that they do not bring home automation features like the August lock.. like geo fencing ..home kit..alexa compatible..auto unlock/ lock and much more. My setup includes the smart lock, smart connect, door sense and smart keypad..connected to my smarthings hub with zwave and also connected with my isy994i hub with Alexa skill enabled.

Really disappointed. It is currently 0 for 22 autounlock attempts
Fishing out my phone and troubleshooting Bluetooth connections is really no easier than putting a key in a lock. Really disappointed. It is currently 0 for 22 autounlock attempts. It has had to "fix" it's Bluetooth connection twice this week. It has disappeared from the zwave host every day. My wife has never event stopped using her key.
